Maunighan's story
James' Place
25/10/23
“In 2021 I lost my friend to suicide and I found it really hard to cope. I was unable to continue with my day to day life. I started drinking and distracting myself to numb the pain but after a while that stopped working and I started feeling suicidal.
My partner was worried about me and looked for help online where she found information about James’ Place. When I first arrived I was really reassured, the place itself was very welcoming, comforting and relaxing. I had my welcome assessment, and it was clear the therapist really knew what he was doing so I felt optimistic they’d be able to help me.
Over the next few weeks attending James’ Place regularly for therapy I felt myself getting stronger and stronger, and almost coming back to myself. My therapist was amazing. I felt so empty in the beginning but after a few weeks of treatment I felt better able to manage my thoughts and be hopeful about the future.
I now attend a peer support group at James’ Place every two weeks which has been brilliant, just to have that space to talk and relate to other men who’ve been in the same place as me. It’s an anchor in my life that I can keep coming back to and helps keep me striving. Since finishing treatment at James’ Place I just feel like I can live my life again and follow my passions. It’s been an amazing experience.”
